Bring Back the Birds Inquiry
The inquiry was undertaken with two classes - year 2 & 3 and year 3 & 4 (6 - 8 year olds).
The teachers were Zania Watt and Jan-Marie Kellow at Opoutere School.
An area of native bush was being developed behind the school and they wanted to attract native/endemic birds to the area. The students needed to choose a tree or bush to plant which would attract these birds. This inquiry had 3 purposes: the first was the authentic context of choosing trees. Second were the science curriculum objectives and third were the research and decision-making skills.
This unit is available to purchase here. It is aimed at New Zealand birds but could be adapted to birds from other countries.
